President Buhari’s full speech at the first Russia-Africa summit in Sochi

President Buhari really said a lot at the Russia-Africa summit which held at Sochi.

President Buhari’s full speech at the first Russia-Africa summit in Sochi

He went on Appreciating all high and well known personality that attended the summit.

Here is his Speech below;

I am delighted to participate in this first and historic Russia-Africa Summit. I thank our chief host, His Excellency Vladimir Putin, President of the Russia Federation for this important initiative and for the warm and generous hospitality accorded to us.

2. I also commend His Excellency, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of the Arab Republic of Egypt, for his visionary and collaborative leadership of the African Union.

3. Today, we live in a world where collective peace and prosperity can only be achieved through collaboration and mutual respect. This reality was aptly captured by the Late Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior when he said and I quote:

“We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

4. Nigeria’s relations with Russia just like the rest of Africa, began during the Soviet era when diplomatic relations were first established in 1960. That relationship covered areas such as education, healthcare, solid minerals development and military assistance especially during Nigeria’s civil war.

5. More recently, our partnership has extended to the oil and gas sector as well as military and technical assistance in support of our fight against Boko Haram insurgency. At this point, I would once again like to thank His Excellency, President Putin for his support especially in the area of security.

6. It is my hope that through this forum, Russia and Africa will revitalize their time-tested relationship by exploring new opportunities for the collective benefit of our peoples.

Excellencies,

7. Since the collapse of the USSR in 1991, relations between Russia and African nations have lagged behind historical levels. The former Soviet Union had been a key partner of Africa.

8. We all remember the strong support we received from the former Soviet Union in our anti-colonial struggles. Africa will continue to remember this, and many other significant gestures of solidarity and support that shaped our history as a continent. We are eternally grateful to the Soviet Union for coming to the aid of Africa in its hour of need.

9. As we live in an increasingly changing world driven by trade, technology and innovation, the time has come to inject new energy and pragmatism in Africa-Russia relations for the mutual benefit of both Africa and Russia.

Excellencies

10. I want to emphasise that this mutually beneficial relationship must go beyond trade and business. Our re-energised partnership must also address challenges such as counter-terrorism, poverty eradication, human and drug trafficking, illicit financial flows, climate change and migration to mention some of the many contemporary challenges facing our peoples.

11. Our continent is rich in human and natural but is lagging behind in capital and technology. This is why we see increased conflict, migration and instability that is also impacting many nations outside Africa.

12. On our part, we in Africa have continued to view Regional Integration as a key development priority. Our integration is one that seeks to address our infrastructure deficit, conflicts and terrorism, climate change, human trafficking and of vitality, trade.

13. Our integration process also takes into account our diversity as a continent and our unique challenges at the national and sub-national levels. This is why progress has been slow but steady.

14. With a population of over 1.2 billion people, for us in Africa, getting our socio-economic integration right presents enormous opportunities as we stand to promote robust, equitable and inclusive growth that will minimize conflict and enhance economic development.

15. Today, these aspirations are captured in the Agenda 2063 of the African Union. We are confident that with strong partners like Russia, our goal of having a peaceful and prosperous continent is achievable.

Excellencies,

16. Nigeria is the largest economy and most populous country in Africa. Today, our population is almost over 200 million people. It is expected to grow to approximately 400 million by 2050. This will make Nigeria the third most populous nation in the world behind China and India.

17. Our economy is heavily dependent for its foreign exchange on oil. With the result that our high Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is not as a result of domestic sector productivity.

18. In the circumstances, although we still remain an oil dependent nation, our government in the last four years has focused on diversifying our economy by supporting key job creating sectors such as agriculture, mining and ICT.

19. To achieve this, we invested aggressively in infrastructure development and introduced policies and programs that enhance our ease of doing business, reduce corruption in the public sector and enforce the rule of law.

20. It is this inclusive economic diversification agenda that we want to forge a new Nigeria-Russia cooperation. Already, we are seeing progress in areas of power generation, solid minerals development and rail transportation and I hope this will be expanded to Agriculture, Manufacturing and other means of Transportation.

21. We already have over 200 Nigerian university students in Russia benefitting from Russian Government scholarships which have been on-going since 1960. Earlier this year, Nigeria signed a Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) with Russia which will expand the human capital development support we are already receiving.

Excellencies, Heads of States and Government,

Distinguished participants,

22. Let me clearly state that the time has come with this historic summit today, for Africa and the Russian Federation to develop new mutually beneficial relations. On our part, I want to assure our Russian friends that Africa is resolute and ready.

23. We look forward to embracing the new dawn of Africa-Russia partnership in general, and the revitalized Nigeria-Russia relations in particular.

I Thank you.

Senate approved N10bn for Kogi state as Ordered by Buhari

On Tuesday, President Muhammadu Buhari  sent a letter to the Senate, seeking for its approval of N10bn to be paid to Kogi State.

Senate approved N10bn for Kogi state as Ordered by Buhari

Buhari, in the letter, addressed to Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, said the money would be used by the state government to settle local debts it incurred as a result of the projects executed on behalf of the Federal Government.

Buhari said his request was based on the resolution passed by the eighth Senate

“FG does not consider the security and welfare of citizen while playing politics ” – Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government affirmed the commitment of the Muhammadu Buhari administration to tackling security challenges in the country without bias.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed, stated this on Tuesday at a special town hall meeting on security in Katsina State.

According to him, the event is unique because it is the first time governors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will be panelists at such meeting since its commencement in 2016.

“FG does not consider the security and welfare of citizen while playing politics ” – Lai Mohammed

“This is first, a testimony to the fact that this Federal Government does not play politics with the security and welfare of citizens,” the minister said.

He added, “Secondly, (it is) a reflection of the patriotism, commitment, and nationalism of the governors, irrespective of their party affiliations. I congratulate all of us for being part of this historic outing.”

No Peace, No Development
Mr Mohammed noted that the government was not unaware of the recent criminal attacks on communities in the North-West.

According to him, cases of banditry, kidnapping and cattle rustling seem to have worsened in the region until recently.

He reminded the meeting that one of the cardinal programmes of the present administration was to tackle insecurity across the country.

The minister said, “Whether it is Boko Haram, banditry, kidnapping, cattle rustling or armed robbery, the administration has faced the challenges posed by insecurity with grit and determination.

“The Federal Government is unrelenting in tackling these challenges because without peace and security, there can be no development.”

“Here in the North-West, the security challenges – banditry, cattle rustling, and kidnapping – have been unique and daunting.

“The deadly attacks that claimed lives and destroyed property were daily making headline news all over the country,” he lamented.

Mr Mohammed decried that the situation became so bad in some of the states in the region that many felt they were intractable.

He was, however, thankful that the efforts of the Federal Government, as well as the determination and innovative efforts of the governments of the affected states, have been a remarkable improvement.

The minister said peace and security were gradually returning to the worst-hit states while progress that has been made in combating banditry, cattle rustling, and kidnapping.

He explained that it has become imperative for the government at the federal and state levels to provide a platform for the governors of the front-line states to highlight the successes they have achieved in their various states in tackling cases of insecurity.

Mr Mohammed was hopeful that at the end of the meeting, the efforts of the governors of the affected states of Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara, as well as the contributions of the Federal Government would be well-documented.

Those present included Governors Aminu Masari (Katsina), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), and Bello Matawalle (Zamfara), as well as the Ministers of Defence and Interior, Major General Bashir Magashi and Mr Rauf Aregbesola, respectively.

President Buhari is not marrying a second wife today

Today, Special Adviser on media and Publicity to president Buhari, Mr Femi Adesina, has revealed that the president, Muhammadu Buhari, is not getting married to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Mrs Sadiya Umar Farouq, .

According to Tribune newspaper, Mr Adesina debunked the news making rounds, saying it was a deceptive manoeuvre by those who fabricated it.

President Buhari is not marrying a second wife today

He added that the news was far from the truth and that no such marriage is taking place at the Presidential Villa on Friday.

Also, a top Aso Rock source added that there was no wedding taking place at the Presidential Villa, neither was there any wedding preparation in Ask Rock for President Buhari.

He said the news circulating round the social media was entirely false. Finding also shows that the said bride, Mrs Farouq, is currently out of the country and presently at the 70th session of the Executive Committee of the High Commissioner’s Programme going on in Geneva that is being organised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Osinbajo entertains dinner guests with stories of ‘ Nigerian swag’

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday at a dinner organised in commemoration of Nigeria’s 59th Independence Anniversary at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja, thrilled the guests with visual descriptions of attributes that make Nigerians outstanding.

Osinbajo entertains dinner guests with stories of ‘ Nigerian swag’

Osinbajo, who spoke on a lighter note, said that one of the distinct attributes of the Nigerian person was the `Nigerian Swag.’

He described `Nigerian swag’ as that uniquely confident way that made Nigerians to stand out everywhere and in everything they did.

Osinbajo, who got the guests laughing and clapping intermittently, cited the sport called Bobsled and presented a power point video of Nigerians girls dancing at the Winter Olympics.

“They thought only white people could do this because it is a winter sport; if you don’t have winter and snow in your country you can’t be a bobsled champion.

“Well, so they thought until the Nigerians came to the Winter Olympics in Pyeong Chang South Korea, three Nigerian girls.

“ Seun Adigun, Ngozi Onwumere and Akuoma Omeoga the first Africans in Bobsled at the Winter Olympics.

“They raced into history in style and they ended it with dance.

“How else would you know that they are Nigerians.’’

He said that the World Cup came in May 2018; but well before the World Cup kicked off, Nigeria had started winning.

Osinbajo recalled that when Nike released the design of Nigeria’s jersey called Naija in Feb. 2018, three million people pre-ordered the Jersey for 90 dollar a piece on line.

He said that eventually thousands of people lined up to buy the jersey and it sold out in the stores within hours.

“The jersey was lit; so lit that we won the first prize for the best dressed team, Peru came second and Belgium came third.’’

The vice president listed the quality and prowess of Nigerian boxer, Anthony Joshua, Nigerian wedding, dance and language as some other aspects of Nigerian uniqueness.

“And then there is Anthony Joshua, as far as we are concerned the best boxer in the world not only is he a heavy hitter– he could also pass for a model; so much Swag.

“How about the Nigerian wedding, it has become the toast of the world, among other things, we are teaching the world that every wedding deserves a hashtag.

“ #Baad 2017, for BankyW and Adesuwa Etomi, #YemiandDolly 1989 or #Dolyem 1989 , that’s me and my lovely wife, to the dramatic entrance of the bridal party, and see the groom flying and of course, the Aso Ebi.

“And everywhere, they are learning our languages; everywhere, here is a kindergarten class in China; the children are learning Igbo; very soon, everyone is going to be speaking Igbo.

“Our contemporary dances have so much swag from skelewu to sekem to shakiti bobo, sakusaku and the most recent, Zanku, I am sure you all know how to gbe se ..gbe se .to gbe body e.

“It is now gbe se, gbe se, all over the world; nobody dances like us; it doesn’t matter whether you are the distinguished senator representing Kogi west or the distinguished senator representing Osun West.’’

Osinbajo also listed one of the richest men in Africa, Aliko Dangote, President Muhammadu Buhari, former President Olusegun Obasanjo as among those who carry Nigerian swag with their dance steps.

According to him, when it comes to fashion, Nigerians are the masters of style.

“From the geles, and look at what Iya rainbow is wearing, and of course the famous Madam Kofo’s gele.

“Nigerians brought Ankara to mainstream fashion.

“So Nigerian designers are making waves internationally with the infusion of Ankara in their collections.

“And the likes of Lisa Folawiyo, Mackie O, Andrew Iyamah, Kenneth Ize, Mowa Ogunlesi, have been featured in Vogue and other international fashion magazines and events such as the New York fashion week.

“The Nigerian-American designer Ena Udemba designed Beyoncé’s drop dead gorgeous Ankara outfit; today the whole world is wearing our Ankara; from Michelle Obama, Rihana and Kim Kardashian, ‘’ he said.

He also displayed Buhari featuring with his `trade mark black kaftan’ describing him as the number one man with the swag.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, thanked those who contributed directly or indirectly toward the success of the 59th Independence celebration.

He said that the administration was determined to build on the foundation for change laid in the last four years.

The dinner featured performances by cultural troupes drawn from different states.

It attracted notable Nigerians including Maryam Abacha, Wife of former Head of State, Sani Abacha, a former Chief of General Staff, Lt.-Gen. Oladipo Diya (rtd) and former Vice President, Namadi Sambo.

Also present were Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, service chiefs, members of the Federal Executive Council, members of the diplomatic corps, captains of industries among others

Buhari picks a date to present Budget 2020 appropriation bill to NASS

The office of the Presidency has revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari will present the 2020 Appropriation Bill to a joint sitting of the National Assembly next week.

Buhari picks a date to present Budget 2020 appropriation bill to NASS

TONTRENDSreports that the administration of Buhari had promised to return Nigeria to the January-December budget cycle.

Nigeria currently runs a May-June budget cycle, a development caused by executive-legislature delays since the 8th National Assembly.

The presidency stated that the failure of the National Assembly to consider and pass the 2020-2022 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategic Paper was part of the reason Buhari was unable to keep to his promise of September Budget presentation.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Reps), Mr Umar El-Yakub also stated that Buhari’s engagement at the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly also delayed the presentation of the 2020 Budget.

Umar El-Yakub told The Punch that much as the presentation was delayed, it was for some reasons.

“Remember that the MTEF was presented to both chambers (Senate and House of Representatives) last week.

“You also know the President just returned from New York at the weekend where he attended the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Coincidentally, today is Independence Day (Tuesday), meaning that only yesterday (Monday) was there to present the budget if he was to present it.

“But, it will be the best bet if he (Buhari) presents the budget after the MTEF has been considered and passed by the National Assembly. So, yes, the budget is a bit late by a week or two, but for good reasons.

“Perhaps, we didn’t anticipate UNGA and the fact that MTEF had to be finalised and approved by the Federal Executive Council before it was transmitted to the National Assembly,” he said.

Asked when the Appropiration Bill would be presented to the National Assembly, the presidential aide replied, “Mr President will be travelling to South Africa on Wednesday (today).

“By the time he comes back, the budget presentation will be done next week (2nd week of October), though I can’t confirm a specific date to you right now.”

I will be the next President after Buhari - Tunde Bakare

Nigerian pastor,Tunde Bakare,  who is the GO of the Latter Rain Assembly, is still adamant on dreams that he will become the next President of Nigeria after President Buhari finishes in 2023.

I will be the next President after Buhari - Tunde Bakare

It is not the first time he has said this. Remember in a video of the clergyman man making this declaration went viral. Speaking in his church yesterday Sunday, September 29th, the clergyman said although the video of him making the declaration about becoming Nigeria’s 16th President was in February 2018, he is still certain that his declaration will come to pass.

I’ll probably be the first President preaching on Sunday. Some are saying supposing it does not work; that is your opinion; when it works, I’ll invite you to the table. You think at this age I will deny things I said. It was mischief makers that took it from one year, seven months and then there was a publication in Tribune on Saturday and they circulated the thing on Sunday; even baba, Kabiesi Awujale said, ‘Ah, ah, the great pastor, you made this declaration and I don’t know anything about it?’ and I said, ‘Baba, it’s not true’ But you said this on Sunday in your church!’ and I said, ‘Sunday, when?’”

Speaking further, the clergyman said the number 16 was significant for him, recalling that the staircase in his father’s house has 16 flights and a book he wrote in 1993 has 16 chapters.

“You think this is an overnight thing? Go to my father’s house and count all the steps; in that house, there are 16 steps. And I say it to those who care to listen; when that time comes, get ready, I will reach my goal. I meant everything I said. It was deliberately so,” he said

After 52 day Behind bars, court finally grants Omoyele Sowore bail

Department of State Service has been asked to release Omoyele Sowore on bail following the court order of Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High court at Abuja.

After 52 day Behind bars, court finally grants Omoyele Sowore bail

The Judge gave the order after hearing to the argument of Sowore's lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) and the prosecuting counsel.

The judge, as part of bail conditions, asked Sowore to drop his passport with the court within 48 hours.

At the hearing today, Sowore's lawyer, Femi Falana insisted that order of 45 days granted to DSS should be vacated since there is no renewal and therefore ask for the release of the respondent in line with section 35 of the constitution.

Falana went on to remind the court that there is no bail application before the court. Filling of an information cannot metamorphose into a remand order. He urged the court to discountenance the prayer by the prosecution for misleading the court that the respondent is facing a capital offence. That insulting the President is not a capital offence

Falana also referred the court to the case of MKO Abiola 1995 vs FG where the appellant was charged with treasonable felony and the court granted him bail even on self recognition. Falana said he was also charged with treasonable felony and Justice Taiwo Taiwo was the one who defended him and he was granted bail.

He then told the court that since the detention order has expired and application for renewal has been withdrawn, the court should make a consequential order and release Sowore. He also said; "If the court wants him and i will produce him (Sowore)."

we will disgrace Buhari in Japan Just like Ekweremadu - Nnamdi Kanu

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB, says members of the group in the Republic of Japan have received orders from him to ”disgrace and arrest” President Buhari when he arrives the Asian country on Sunday, August 25th.

In a declaration published on Friday, August 23, Kanu said President Buhari must be detained and handed over to Japanese officials to allow him to answer for his alleged mass assassination and crimes against mankind that he supposedly committed against IPOB members in Nigeria between 2015 and 2019.

He urged IPOB members in the country to mobilise and ensure that they arrest President Buhari, stressing that the group is ready for the legal aftermath of the action.

The Presidency on Friday announced that President Buhari will leave Nigeria for Japan on Sunday August 25th to participate in the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development, holding in the City of Yokohama from August 28th-30th.

Recall that last Saturday, members of the secessionist group attacked former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, at the New Yam Festival in Germany.

Trump announces ‘landmark agreement’ with Guatemala to restrict asylum claims

President Trump on Friday announced a so-called "safe third country" deal with Guatemala to restrict asylum claims to the United States from Central America, calling it a “landmark agreement” and arguing it “will put the coyotes and smugglers out of business."

Trump announces ‘landmark agreement’ with Guatemala to restrict asylum claims-olowublog

"We've long been working with Guatemala and now we can do it the right way," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, with Guatemalan interior minister Enrique Degenhart at his side.

Trump told reporters he believes “this will really help” with the situation at the border.

“This is a very big day,” he said.

The agreement would require migrants, including Salvadorans and Hondurans, who cross into Guatemala on their way to the U.S. to apply for protections in Guatemala instead of at the U.S. border. It could potentially ease the crush of migrants overwhelming the U.S. immigration system and hand Trump a concession he could herald as a win as he struggles to live up to his campaign promises on immigration.

The announcement comes after a court in California blocked Trump's most restrictive asylum effort to date, one that would effectively end protection at the southern border.

The two countries had been negotiating such an agreement for months, and Trump threatened Wednesday to place tariffs or other consequences on Guatemala if it didn't reach a deal.

It's not clear how the agreement will take effect. Guatemala's Constitutional Court has granted three injunctions preventing its government from entering into a deal without approval of the country's congress.

Senate calls for National Security Summit

The Senate today called for immediate convocation of a National Security Summit to address insecurity in the country.

Senate calls for National Security Summit

This is following a point of order raised by Sen. Ayo Akinyelure (APC Ondo), over the killing of one her constituents, Mrs Funke Olakunrin.

Akinyelure expressed concern over the killing and similar ones, which he described as “increasing and incessant murder of innocent Nigerians by gunmen along major highways in the country.”

He also cautioned that if immediate actions were not taken, the development might lead to ethno-religious crises, especially in the Southern part of the country.

While urging the Senate to observe a minute silence in memory of the deceased and others who died in similar circumstances, he said attention of the Federal Government should be drawn to the situation.

Also, Sen. Tolu Odebiyi (APC-Ogun), called on the Senate as an institution to sit down with the presidency and the security formations in a meeting to take immediate action.

However, the Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Sen. Ajayi Boroface (APC-Ondo), urged his colleagues to be cautious about linking a particular tribe as perpetrators of the attacks.

We should approach this matter maturely and encourage the federal government to improve on the state of security.

“We should not link a particular tribe with the killings, as being observed in the social media. Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Fulani people have all been killed,” he said.

The President of the Senate, Dr Ahmad Lawan, on his submission equally lamented the situation, which he said was being felt across the country.

He, therefore, said stakeholders should immediately converge in a robust national security summit to discuss and address the situation.

“The security situation is all over the country. It is very unfortunate just like all our colleagues have said in their contributions.

“We should have one national security summit on this. The summit should be all-encompassing and all-inclusive, involving other arms of government and various security formations,” he said.

Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore calls for Obasanjo’s arrest

The apex Fulani socio-cultural organisation in Nigeria, Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, has criticised Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, for blaming herdsmen for the insecurity in the country, while calling for the arrest of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Insecurity: Miyetti Allah calls for Obasanjo’s arrest

Obasanjo had written an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on the prevalence of insecurity in the country, calling for a national dialogue where the Fulani and other ethnic groups can be open about their grievances that have led to the insecurity in the country.

Similarly, Soyinka called for a national conference to address the killings in the country by suspected herdsmen.

But the National Secretary of the Miyetti Allah, Alhassan Saleh, in an interview with Punch said the Fulani should not be blamed for the rate of insecurity in the country.

According to Saleh, Obasanjo should offer any information his status may have afforded him to solve the security crisis.

He said, “The fact that there is insecurity, I don’t think the Fulani are responsible for it. The narrative that we are responsible for the insecurity is even the problem we have with the Nigerian state.

“When any crime happens, even before there is an investigation, people rush to the press and start accusing Fulani herdsmen. Herdsmen are supposed to be carrying herds of cows but if somebody is a criminal or an armed robber, he should be treated as such.

“But if Obasanjo, in particular, having ruled this country for so many years and with his network of security contacts, both locally and internationally, has information, I think he can volunteer it.”

Asked about a proposed national platform for dialogue, Saleh said,

“Which national dialogue? We have a National Assembly. Whatever they have, they should send it to the National Assembly. What is the function of the National Assembly? People lost power and don’t want to agree that in a democracy, you may be in power and another time, you won’t be in power.

“If we have confidence in those we elected, I think whatever issue they have, they can channel it to the National Assembly. They want another talk shop probably to come and reposition themselves and their cronies into another jamboree.

“Where is the Goodluck Jonathan conference report? Where are the other conferences’ reports? They are just pushing an agenda; in fact, they are desperate and very diabolical in their attempt to cause a crisis in this country. My worry is that the government is not decisive in dealing with characters of that nature.”

Saleh advised the Federal Government to take decisive action against all “elements” and their sponsors causing instability in the country, adding that Obasanjo may want to “destabilise the government.”

“The earlier they get him (Obasanjo) arrested and dealt with, according to the laws of the land, the better. He doesn’t mean well for the country. We just elected a new government; we have a National Assembly that was just inaugurated. Nobody needs any conference, except they are pushing for something else.

“The unfortunate thing is that intellectuals like Wole Soyinka are also joining the bandwagon of these discredited politicians. But our worry is that they seem to associate every crime that happens now to the Fulani, simply because the President is a Fulani man.

“We are just waiting and watching carefully because we are not demanding too much from the Nigerian state. All we are saying is give us space to graze our animals. That is not difficult,” he said.

I am constrained to write to you this open letter. I decided to make it an open letter because the issue is very weighty and must be greatly worrisome to all concerned Nigerians and that means all right-thinking Nigerians and those resident in Nigeria. Since the issue is of momentous concern to all well-meaning and all right-thinking Nigerians, it must be of great concern to you, and collective thinking and dialoguing is the best way of finding an appropriate and adequate solution to the problem. The contents of this letter, therefore, should be available to all those who can help in proffering effective solutions for the problem of insecurity in the land.

One of the spinoffs and accelerants is the misinformation and disinformation through the use of fake news. A number of articles, in recent days, have been attributed to me by some people who I believe may be seeking added credence and an attentive audience for their opinions and viewpoints. As you know very well, I will always boldly own what I say and disown what is put into my mouth. But the issue I am addressing here is very serious; it is the issue of life and death for all of us and for our dear country, Nigeria. This issue can no longer be ignored, treated with nonchalance, swept under the carpet or treated with cuddling glove.

The issue is hitting at the foundation of our existence as Nigerians and fast eroding the root of our Nigerian community. I am very much worried and afraid that we are on the precipice and dangerously reaching a tipping point where it may no longer be possible to hold danger at bay. Without being immodest, as a Nigerian who still bears the scar of the Nigerian civil war on my body and with a son who bears the scar of fighting Boko Haram on his body, you can understand, I hope, why I am so concerned. When people are desperate and feel that they cannot have confidence in the ability of government to provide security for their lives and properties, they will take recourse to anything and everything that can guarantee their security individually and collectively.

For over ten years, for four of which you have been the captain of the ship, Boko Haram has menacingly ravaged the land and in spite of government’s claim of victory over Boko Haram, the potency and the activities of Boko Haram, where they are active, remain undiminished, putting lie to government’s claim. The recent explanation of the Chief of Army Staff for non-victory due to lack of commitment and lack of motivation on the part of troops bordering on sabotage speaks for itself. Say what you will, Boko Haram is still a daily issue of insecurity for those who are victimised, killed, maimed, kidnapped, raped, sold into slavery and forced into marriage and for children forcibly recruited into carrying bombs on them to detonate among crowds of people to cause maximum destructions and damage. And Boko Haram will not go away on the basis of sticks alone, carrots must overweigh sticks. How else do you deal with issues such as only about 50% literacy in North-East with over 70% unemployment?

Herdsmen/farmers crises and menace started with government treating the issue with cuddling glove instead of hammer. It has festered and spread. Today, it has developed into banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery and killings all over the country. The unfortunate situation is that the criminality is being perceived as a ‘Fulani’ menace unleashed by Fulani elite in the different parts of the country for a number of reasons but even more, unfortunately, many Nigerians and non-Nigerians who are friends of Nigeria attach vicarious responsibility to you as a Fulani elite and the current captain of the Nigeria ship. Perception may be as potent as reality at times. Whatever may be the grievances of Fulanis, if any, they need to be put out in the open and their grievances, if legitimate, be addressed; and if other ethnic groups have grievances, let them also be brought out in the open and addressed through debate and dialogue.

The main issue, if I may dare say, is poor management or mismanagement of diversity which, on the other hand, is one of our greatest and most important assets. As a result, very onerous cloud is gathering. And rain of destruction, violence, disaster and disunity can only be the outcome. Nothing should be taken for granted, the clock is ticking with the cacophony of dissatisfaction and disaffection everywhere in and outside the country. The Presidency and the Congress in the US have signalled to us to put our house in order. The House of Lords in the UK had debated the Nigerian security situation. We must understand and appreciate the significance, implication and likely consequences of such concerns and deliberations.

No one can stop hate speech, violent agitation and smouldering violent agitation if he fans the embers of hatred, disaffection and violence. It will continue to snowball until it is out of control. A stitch in time saves nine, goes the old wise saying.

With the death of Funke, Chief Fasoranti’s daughter, some sympathetic Nigerian groups are saying “enough is enough”. Prof. Anya, a distinguished Nigerian merit Laureate, has this to say “We can no longer say with certainty that we have a nation”. Niger-Delta leaders, South-Eastern leaders, Middle-Belt leaders and Northern Elders Forum have not remained quiet. Different ordinary Nigerians at home and abroad are calling for different measures to address or ameliorate the situation. All the calls and cries can only continue to be ignored at the expense of Nigerian unity, if not its continued existence.

To be explicit and without equivocation, Mr. President and General, I am deeply worried about four avoidable calamities:

1. abandoning Nigeria into the hands of criminals who are all being suspected, rightly or wrongly, as Fulanis and terrorists of Boko Haram type;

2. spontaneous or planned reprisal attacks against Fulanis which may inadvertently or advertently mushroom into pogrom or Rwanda-type genocide that we did not believe could happen and yet it happened.

3. similar attacks against any other tribe or ethnic group anywhere in the country initiated by rumours, fears, intimidation and revenge capable of leading to pogrom;

4. violent uprising beginning from one section of the country and spreading quickly to other areas and leading to dismemberment of the country.

It happened to Yugoslavia not too long ago. If we do not act now, one or all of these scenarios may happen. We must pray and take effective actions at the same time. The initiative is in the hands of the President of the nation, but he cannot do it alone. In my part of the world, if you are sharpening your cutlass and a mad man comes from behind to take the cutlass from you, you need other people’s assistance to have your cutlass back without being harmed. The mad men with serious criminal intent and terrorism as core value have taken cutlass of security. The need for assistance to regain control is obviously compelling and must be embraced now.

A couple of weeks ago at a public lecture, I had said, among other things, that:

“In all these issues of mobilisation for national unity, stability, security, cooperation, development, growth and progress, there is no consensus. Like in the issue of security, government should open up discussion, debate and dialogue as part of consultation at different levels and the outcome of such deliberations should be collated to form inputs into a national conference to come up with the solution that will effectively deal with the issues and lead to rapid development, growth and progress which will give us a wholesome society and enhanced living standard and livelihood in an inclusive and shared society. It will be a national programme. We need unity of purpose and nationally accepted strategic roadmap that will not change with whims and caprices of any government. It must be owned by the citizens, people’s policy and strategy implemented by the government no matter its colour and leaning.

Some of the groups that I will suggest to be contacted are: traditional rulers, past heads of service (no matter how competent or incompetent they have been and how much they have contributed to the mess we are in), past heads of para-military organisations, private sector, civil society, community leaders particularly in the most affected areas, present and past governors, present and past local government leaders, religious leaders, past Heads of State, past intelligence chiefs, past Heads of Civil Service and relevant current and retired diplomats, members of opposition and any groups that may be deemed relevant.”

The President must be seen to be addressing this issue with utmost seriousness and with maximum dispatch and getting all hands on deck to help. If there is failure, the principal responsibility will be that of the President and no one else. We need cohesion and concentration of effort and maximum force – political, economic, social, psychological and military – to deal successfully with the menace of criminality and terrorism separately and together. Blame game among own forces must be avoided. It is debilitating and only helpful to our adversary. We cannot dither anymore. It is time to confront this threat headlong and in a manner that is holistic, inclusive and purposeful.

For the sake of Nigeria and Nigerians, I pray that God may grant you, as our President, the wisdom, the understanding, the political will and the courage to do what is right when it is right and without fear or favour. May God save, secure, protect and bless Nigeria. May He open to us a window of opportunity that we can still use to prevent the worst happening. As we say in my village, “May God forbid bad thing”.

Court orders Patience Jonathan to forfeit N9.2 billion to FG

Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of the Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered ex-First Lady Patience Jonathan to forfeit $8.4 million, N9.2 billion to the Federal Government.

Court orders Patience Jonathan to forfeit N9.2 billion to FG

Delivering judgement in the suit filed before her court by the EFCC today Monday July 1st, Justice Olatoregun held that the money is reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime.

She granted an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that the money should be permanently forfeited.

The judge held that Mrs Jonathan could not prove that the money was legitimately earned.

Mrs Jonathan’s lawyer, Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), had held that the money in question were cash gifts the former first lady received from well wishers while her husband, Goodluck Jonathan, was in office.

Fayose slams Obasanjo, hails president Buhari

Former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for honouring MKO Abiola, presumed winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Fayose slams Obasanjo, hails president Buhari

Fayose, a critic of the President, took to his Twitter account to knock Obasanjo and hail Buhari.

He tweeted;

‘Honouring MKO Abiola by Buhari is to Obasanjo’s shame. It remains a sore-point of his political history that because of ego, Obasanjo, who’s the greatest beneficiary of the June 12, 1993 struggle, failed to honour his kinsman, MKO Abiola. So, I commend President Buhari.
