The fashion of Toledo has defied trends in catwalks, embracing flexibility and distinction.

"I'm not a person of fashion," Toledo told CNN in 2012, calling herself an "engineer."

Ruben Toledo, her husband and professional partner, said she had died of breast cancer.

The two met in high school, Ruben claiming at first sight that he fell in love with Isabel. It took her four years to love him back, but in 1984 they married and were close, rarely seen apart, professional collaborators.

She released an autobiography in 2012 entitled Roots of Style, which Ruben Toledo illustrated and described together with their life.

The choice by Michelle Obama to wear Toledo at the opening symbolized a fresh era.

"For all ages, sizes, and styles, I've always believed in fashion," Toledo told Interview Magazine in 2014. "My idea is variety. I enjoy distinction. I enjoy change. I enjoy eccentricity and experimentation. I don't like to know and then discover something.
